Training your dog to stay on command is an extension of the SIT or DOWN command and keeps them in position for a longer period of time. Thus your dog will need to reliably obey these commands first before introducing the STAY command. Train your dog when he is alert but not overly excited. Command your dog to sit. Then hold the palm of your hand in front of your dog’s face as you say his name and the STAY command. Take a few steps back while keeping your hand up. Drop your hand and give him a food treat and lots of praise. Practice this and gradually increase the distance between you and your dog and the time he is staying before you give him the treat. Gradually reduce and then eliminate the treats so your dog will stay because of your command alone. Learn more from your best veterinarians Plano, TX.
