Most dogs beg for food because it works. Your dog begs and you give him food. Thus the first step in training your dog not to beg for food is to stop giving him food when he begs. Make sure all other family members follow this same rule. Insist that your dog sits or lies down while you are eating so he is well under table level. You may need to move him to the other side of the room or another room to stop the nudging. Consider feeding your dog his food in his own bowl while you are eating so he gets to eat without the begging part. Never yell at your dog or punish him while he is learning but be sure to praise him when he gets through a meal without begging. Learn more from your Happy Valley, OR veterinary clinic.
