Protecting Your Dog’s Back

Image result for Protecting Your Dog’s Back

Some dog breeds are more prone to back injuries such as Dachshunds, Bassett Hounds and Shih Tzus. However, any breed of dog can injure their backs if you don’t take precautions. Know that many back injuries are caused by cumulative behavior so you know to develop good habits to protect your dog’s back. Pick up your dog with both hands and use your forearms to keep him horizontal. Don’t allow your dog to jump down from sofas or beds or even from the back of the car. A vertical position or excess pressure on the front legs will compress the spine. Keep your dog slim and exercise him often to avoid strain on the back and to keep it strong. Use a harness rather than a collar when walking your dog on a leash to distribute pressure throughout the back and shoulders. Learn more from your Tipp City, OH veterinary clinic.
