Children love dogs and often want to approach dogs whenever they see them. Hopefully an adult will give you a heads up and ask if it is okay if their children pet your dogs while you are walking around the neighborhood. Your dog should be on a leash and if he is friendly and likes being petted by children, then you can grant permission. If your dog is large, have him sit down so he doesn’t accidently knock over a kid or jump up on them. Keep a tight rein on the leash so your dog stays close to you. Watch the children with your dog and provide direction if their parents don’t such as to be gentle, let the dog sniff your hand, pet from front to back. If the children are too loud or aggressive, feel free to decline the meeting between them and your dog. Learn more from your Shawnee, KS veterinary clinic.
