Training Your Dog to Sit on Command

Training Your Dog to Sit on Command

Training your dog to sit on command is an important way to get your dog under control quickly. Sitting is also the beginning position for many more advanced obedience training. Start training your dog when he is alert but not overly excited. Get down to your dog’s level and hold a food treat in front of his nose to get his attention. Move the treat up and over his head so he needs to lower his rear end to follow it. Say your dog’s name followed by the SIT command. As soon as your dog’s rear end touches the ground, give him the treat and lots of praise. Practice this and as your dog becomes more reliable, delay giving him the treat so he needs to sit properly. Gradually reduce and then eliminate the treats so your dog sits by your command and praise alone. Learn more from your Indianapolis, IN veterinary clinic.
