Stopping Your Dog From Begging for Food

Dogs generally beg for food because it works. Your dog begs. You give him food. Thus the first stop in stopping your dog from begging for food is to stop giving him food when he begs. Insist that your dog sit or lie down while you are eating so he is well below the level of your table while you are eating. You may need to move him across the room or to another room while you are eating. Consider feeding your dog his food from his bowl while you are eating so he gets to eat but without the begging. Praise your dog whenever you get through a meal without the begging. Do not punish your dog or yell at him as he learns not to beg since you probably started the behavior in the first place. Be patient and kind as your dog is learning. Learn more from your San Leandro CA veterinary clinic.
