Teaching your dog to sit on command gives you a way to get your dog under control quickly. It promptly stops whatever behavior your dog may be doing to obey to your command. It also works on your relationship of trust with your dog. Start by getting down to the same level as your dog. Hold a treat in front of his nose and raise it up and over his head so he must lower his rear end to continue following it. Say your dog’s name followed by the SIT command. At the moment your dog’s rear end touches the floor, give him the treat and lots of praise. Practice this often and gradually increase the sitting time before your dog receives the treat. Then work to eliminate the treat so your dog sits by your command and praise alone. Learn more from your Pickerington, OH veterinary clinic.
